One of the reasons why driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol and drugs is so highly penalized is because of the danger that is involved. Intoxicated drivers have impaired vision, reflexes, and judgment. They don’t realize how fast they are going and have the tendency to drift across lane lines, brake or speed up erratically, and blow through stop signs and traffic lights as though they didn’t exist. The high penalties for DUI are meant to prevent drunk driving in the first place, but in the event that someone does drive while intoxicated and causes an accident with serious bodily injury, the consequences levied against them can be extremely severe.
